H2K2

Saturday just about Noon, I headed to the H2K2 conference at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. I was reluctant to pay the $50 conference fee because I knew the con was going to be not to my liking. My friend Vertigo had told me that they figured a way fake the badges to get into the con. I didn't hear from my friend till later in the day, so I paid the fee. The main vendor and network area was located on the Mezzanine. I went up the escalators and into the vendor area. I kept walking around in circles but I couldn't find anything of interest. The network area smelled of trash and there was hardly places to plug in for power. There seemed to be a lot of people playing Atari 2600 units and other game consoles. This was really boring and lame for a 'hacker' convention. There was a MAME arcade PC setup but again, lame for a con. I bumped into the guys from suspicious.org and they were telling me about the network. I found out they weren't having and easy time with the infrastructure. I took out my laptop and plugged in by their table. I showed them how I utilized ettercap and demonstrated how I kill connections and decrypted ssh1/ssl traffic. The wireless network was really slow and there wasn't much interesting traffic, so I packed up the laptop and walked to the area where cDc started to do their presentation which I didn't understand. All I heard was that they will release software in two weeks. Well one more reason to skip H2K and head straight to Defcon. The conference was also on the 18th floor where it was split up in to two areas. One of the areas was showing movies and documentaries one after another. The audio wasn't that great, the second con room could also hear the audio from the movies which was very annoying. Hanging around the con was really boring but outside I ran into lots of friends such as Luminare, BlueRose, Monster, Wolfgame, and Bobcat. I did one more lap around the con and then went back to my friend Rabbit's house. After some dinner I headed to Raven for a drink or two and then went back up to the con and popped into the Blarney Rock which seems to be always filled with people from the con. I went to the back and saw Izaac, Bobcat, Vertigo and Elyn. I sat down and did the drinking thing for a while. Just about 3:00am the bar wanted everyone to leave. A bunch of us went up to Bobcat's room where I met Laz. After several more beers, I was asked if I wanted to take part in a mission. I was up for anything at that time that would prove to be risky so I of course said, "Whats the plan?". One goal was to get all the H2K2 banners down from the walls of the con. The other mission was to get the tall metal letters that spelled H2K2. The letters would be one of the hardest to get. There was security staff all around. My idea was to create a diversion since I really stood out with the bright hair and Hawaiian shirt I was wearing. I and some girl from the 303 named B9? went to the lobby of the hotel and got in th revolving door and started spinning it fast as we were making a ruckus. The security staff all came down to the door and were yelling us to stop. Finally my shoe came off and wedged in the doors path causing our fun to stop. Roadie, who was heading up head security and had not had much sleep, came outside and approached us. He said "Thank You" as we ripped the badges off our necks. We argued with him and he continue to tell us we were banned from the con. We acted like we were going to have the hotel staff call the cops to get Roadie to follow us away from the doors and area where the big letters were at. I yelled to Roadie "This is fucked up, I know you and you are making a huge mistake". He replied "I know you too, and this goes against my better judgement but here" and he gave us our badges back. We went to the deli and then back up to Bobcat's room. When the answered the door I said "you better had gotten the letters". Sure enough, they did. The rumour started somewhere else that two kids stole the letters and Roadie had them arrested and pressed charges. He also said that the letters with the police. This made it even funnier. Bobcat and Laz who had took the letters thought they should put the letters on the 18th floor. When they got up there Bobcat had an idea. He said that the letters could make up the word KISS. So they positioned the letters like that and came back down to the room. It was getting very late, just about 8:00am and the newest idea was to make new fake badges but to change the letters on the badges to say KISS as well. We were on our way to Kinko's and I just couldn't keep up anymore. I decided to head back to Rabbit's place and I went to sleep. It must have been 10:00am. I slept and slept but never made it back. I wish I had the energy to go back but I had to sleep. I would have liked to see the new badges and see if there was anymore news about the signs, etc..  Pictures are here
